Mary Tomory, 92

BOARDMAN – There will be a Panachia service at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at the Fox Funeral Home followed by a Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. at the Infant Jesus Byzantine Catholic Church for Mary Tomory, 92, who passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon at Valley Care Northside Medical Center with her family by her side. Father Christopher Burke will be officiating the services with the assistance of Msgr. Alexis Mihalik.
Mary was born on Aug. 7, 1920, in Porach, Czechoslovakia, coming to the United States as a one year-old child with her parents, Dan and Mary Vansuch Volchko. Moving from Uniontown, Pa., to Campbell in 1925, Mary became a life-long area resident.
She attended Campbell Memorial High School and graduated from the Paramount Beauty School as a licensed cosmetologist in 1937. Beginning her hairdressing career at the Adoria Salon above the Warner Theater building in downtown Youngstown, Mary soon learned that her practice would turn into a life-long passion.
On April 5, 1944, Mary opened her own salon, Gay’s Beauty Shop, on the fourth floor of the Federal Building on Phelps Street. She named it after her husband, Gay, who happened to set sail for Europe during World War II on the first day she opened her business. Through the years, many hairstyles had come and gone, as well as many beauty salons in the downtown area, but Gay’s Beauty Shop endured for 61 years.
Mary’s friendly personality and warm smile, along with the passion to make her clients not only look better, but feel better too, were the hallmarks of her business. Finally, Mary retired in 2005 after spending 68 years as a licensed hairstylist.
Her natural beauty only enhanced her flair for classic style. Even in her retirements years, her desire to look her best at all times did not waiver. Despite her strong work ethic, she always found time to enjoy the fruits of her labor, especially when it came to traveling and shopping throughout the United States with her family.
She will be greatly missed by her son, Dennis Tomory, with whom she lived in Boardman; her sisters, Hazel Ruth Barrett of Austintown, worked as a hairdresser in the beauty shop, and Ethel (Robert) Petruska of Campbell; her sister-in-law, Lydia Hoperich of Henderson, Nev.; as well as many nieces and nephews, who will also sadly miss her.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gay W. Tomory, whom she married on Flag Day, June 14, 1941, and to whom she was married for 70 years; a brother, Thomas Volchko; and a sister, Helen Fedor.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman, followed by a Parastas service.
