Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 1 at 10:00 am at Christ Our Savior - St Nicholas Church in Struthers, OH celebrated by Reverend Martin Celuch for Robert J. McDermott ,93, who passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 27th at The Inn at Poland Way with his family by his side.
Bob was born on February 27, 1925 in Youngtown, a son of Joseph and Letty (Mylott) McDermott. He attended Ursuline High School before joining the Army Air Corps and served through the end of World War II. He joined the Youngtown Fire Department in 1950 rising to the rank of captain and city arson investigator prior to his retirement in 1977. He was the original treasure of the Youngtown Firefighters Credit Union. Following his retirement he was Vice President of the Police and Fire Retirees of Ohio. He aided in securing benefits to widows of fellow firemen and policemen. He was a founding member of the Mahoning Valley Gaelic Society and was honored as Gael of the Year in 1975. He was an active member of the St Vincent DePaul Society.
He leaves his bride of 71 years, Marion (McKeown). He is also survived by a son, Kevin (Cindy) and two daughters, Coleen (Jerry) McAtee and Maureen (Jeff) Novotny. He leaves six granddaughters who were his pride and joy; Erin (Michael) Swanbeck, Amy (Jeff) Masenheimer, Megan (Adam) Molyet, Courtney McAtee, Ciara (Happel) Scurry and Kelly McDermott. He also leaves behind six great grandchildren; Addison and Reagan Swanbeck, Claire and Austin Molyet, and Henry and Nolan Masenheimer
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn Neutzie.
Calling hours will be on Friday, November 30 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Fox Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to MVI Hospice Care. His family would like to express their gratitude to the hospice care givers and to the staff at The Inn at Poland Way for their kindness and compassionate care.
