Alfred R. "Stab" Stabilito, 94 BOARDMAN - Alfred R. "Stab" Stabilito passed away at home with family and friends by his side on Saturday, May 30, 2015. He died of natural causes following a brief illness. He was born November 2, 1920 in Youngstown, OH and was a lifelong resident. He graduated from South High School where he played football as a Guard; and in 1939 he was named to the second-team All-City Conference. Stab worked as a tool and die maker most of his life, retiring from General Motors in February 1986. Even after his retirement, he stayed in contact with co-workers whom he visited often. He was a Supply Clerk with the United States Army during WWII where he received an honorable discharge. He was proud to serve for his country and talked frequently about the various cities and countries during his enlistment. He was a loveable man who touched people's hearts because of his sincere and fun personality. He easily made friends because he was compassionate and genuinely cared about others. Everyone who met him loved his company. Al enjoyed sports, especially football. He was a fan of the Cleveland Browns and The Ohio State Buckeyes. Until recently, he kept up the family tradition of cooking pasta every Sunday. Also, he enjoyed going to breakfast with his friends and met monthly to play cards. He was a Trustee and lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8841. In July of 1958, he and his wife, Marie (Shones) of Youngstown were married at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Youngstown. Special thanks to Father Bernard Timothy, OP of St. Dominic's who visited Al several times while he was in the hospital and at home. He was grateful to receive Holy Communion, Anointing of the Sick and special blessings. Also, thanks to family, friends and neighbors who visited him at home over the last few months. Left to cherish his memory is his best friend and son, Alfred F. Stabilito of Boardman; his daughter Gina and son-in-law Joseph Popovich of Canfield; grandson Nicholas Popovich and his fiancAC. Taylor Halko of Phoenix, Arizona; many friends, neighbors and long-time acquaintances. Family members preceded in death were his wife; his parents Alfred L. and Mary Stabilito; his brother Joseph Stabilito; sister Marie Carter; and grandson, Matthew F. Popovich. Calling hours will be from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 and Wednesday, June 3, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. at Fox and Sons Funeral Home, 4700 Market Street, Boardman, followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Dominic's, 77 East Lucius Avenue in Youngstown, OH 44507. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown. The family requests any monetary contributions may be made in memory of Alfred R. Stabilito to St. Dominic's Church, or to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market Street, Youngstown, OH 44512.
