Attorney John C. "Jack" Thorne Jr., 74 YOUNGSTOWN- A There will be prayers at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Fox Funeral Home followed by a resurrection mass at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Church officiated by Fr. Edward Noga for John C. "Jack" Thorne Jr. who passed away at his residence Thursday morning. Jack was born June 24,1942 in Youngstown, a son to the late John C. Sr. and Anna White Thorne. Atty. Thorne attended Cleveland Elementary, Princeton Junior High School and graduated from South High School in 1960. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from The Ohio State University in 1964 and his Juris Doctorate degree from Ohio Northern University in 1967. In addition, he received additional education at Youngstown State University, The Graduate School at Youngstown State and the Ohio State College of Law. Shortly after passing the Ohio Bar exam, he entered the military serving with the United States Army. His initial post was with the 287th Military Police brigade in West Berlin, Germany. He volunteered for duty in Viet Nam and finished his military career serving with the First Logistical Command in Long Binh, Viet Nam. He attained the rank of E5 and received several decorations including the World War II Army of Occupation medal, Army Commendation medal, together with Viet Nam service and campaign medals. Upon his return home, Atty. Thorne joined the legal department of Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation, specializing in minor tenant mall leasing. After a year he returned to private practice with offices in Youngstown and Lisbon. It was at this time he was appointed as an Assistant Ohio Attorney General representing the Ohio Department of Transportation. He served in a part time capacity and primarily handled eminent domain cases. He also served as Special Counsel to the Attorney General for sales tax collections and miscellaneous matters. During his years in Columbiana County, Atty. Thorne served as one of the three original County Public Defenders. He was also the first Columbiana County Domestic Relations referee, a position now known as Domestic Relations Magistrate. He also served as an acting County Court Judge holding court in East Palestine and Salem. Jack was a former president of the Columbiana County Bar Association and served on numerous bar committees in Mahoning and Columbiana Counties. He was a member of the Ohio State, Mahoning and Columbiana Bar Associations. He was licensed to practice law in Ohio, Federal Court and the Supreme Court of the United States. In 1995, he went full time with the Ohio Attorney General's Office in Cleveland devoting most of his time to the handling of eminent domain cases throughout the eastern half of the state. He retired in 2002 and limited his practice, as he said "to those matters that intrigue". He enjoyed gardening, traveling, visiting with friends and acquaintances and talking over old times with lawyers and judges. He was an avid sports fan and cheered regularly for the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He was a former member and player of the Mahoning County Polo Club. Jack will be greatly missed by his wife, the former Elizabeth Ann Ginnetti whom he married on May 8, 1976 and then moved to New Waterford, OH in March of 1977. He also leaves his two sons, John C. (Jennifer) Thorne III of Akron, Thomas Thorne of Tampa, FL; his two grandchildren, John Thorne IV and Emma Thorne of Akron; a brother Robert W. (Kathleen) Thorne of Berlin Center and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Joanne Reiley. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Fox Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman.
