Obituary

Bernice Catherine Harnishfeger, 86, of Canfield, A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Church, celebrated by Rev. Terrence J. Hazel. Passed away on to her heavenly family on Friday June 10 ,after a brief stay at St. Elizabeth Hospital. She was born on April 23, 1930, in Youngstown, the daughter of Vincent and Catherine Walsh Wittenauer. For the past 63 years Bernice shared the joy of life together with her High School sweetheart her husband Byron W. Harnishfeger, Jr. Bernice is a graduate of Boardman High School and very honored and proudly continued her studies at Youngstown Hospital School of Nursing, receiving her degree in 1951. She then became employed at Youngstown Hospital Association as a registered nurse. Bernice remained home as a mother and homemaker raising her five children in their early years and returned to her nursing career at St. Elizabeth Hospital for 20 years until her retirement in 1987. She was an active member of her parish, St. Michael's Church in Canfield serving in the Alter and Rosary Society and also serving on various other church committees. Bernice enjoyed extensive travels with her husband throughout all 50 states as well as international cruises. Camping was always enjoyed with family and she spent endless instructional hours baking with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Another joy for Bernice was attending various grandchildren's sporting and school activities. She is Survived by her Husband Byron " Bud " Harnishfeger and Three daughters, Denise Harnishfeger of Hubbard, Phyllis ( Mike ) Manning of Westlake Village, CA. and Agnes ( Jeffery ) Schauer of Round Hill, VA. and one son Byron W. ( Beth ) Harnishfeger, III of Boardman. She will be missed by her Seven grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer ( Patrick ) O'Brien, Byron W. Harnishfger, IV., Tyler Schauer( Taylor Morris ) , Karlie Schauer, Stephanie Klucher ( Blake Novotny ), Karl Harnishfeger, Kelsie Harnishfeger and five great grandchildren and a brother L. Joseph Wittenauer of Dayton and sister -in- law Mary Jo Wittenauer of Fairlawn as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins, particularly helpful cousin Barbara Calhoun, her " Guardian Angel ". Bernice is predeceased by her parents and a brother Vincent William Wittenauer, a son Karl Edward Harnishfeger and a grandchild, Adele L. Harnishfeger. Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday at Saint Michael's Church 300 N. Broad St. Canfield, Ohio 44406.
