Bess Z. Stanos, 84 BOARDMAN - The Greek-American community of the Mahoning Valley lost one of their most precious members with the passing of Bess Z. Stanos, 84. She died Dec. 11, 2014 Bess was beautiful, vibrant and loved by everyone whose life she touched. Her compassion, generosity, and selfless desire to be there for her family, friends, neighbors and the church extended throughout every aspect of her life. She was caring, humble, loving and a lively spirit to us all. She was born Vasiliki "Bess" Zigoris to her parents Magdalene Ghiates Zigoris and Constantine (Gust) Zigoris on Aug. 27, 1930, in Youngstown. A graduate of South High School in 1948 and Ohio University in 1952, with an education degree, she went on to have a distinguished career in teaching at several schools in both Columbus and Youngstown. Her dedication to teaching was also evident in her personal and family life mentoring not only her two children, but numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dr. Pardee P. Stanos, whom she married in 1952; and Anthony Marcovecchio. She was a member of St. John's Greek Orthodox Church. She is survived by her son, Dr. Peter P. (Laurena) Stanos of Nashville; her daughter, Lisa Stanos of Potomac, Md.; grandchildren Alexia Lalos and Peter Lalos; a sister, Helen Valavanis of Foster City, Calif.; brother Dr. Mark (Irene) Zigoris of Cincinnati; and numerous nieces, nephews and god children. She was a member of Philoptochos and Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. She was also a Master Gardener. Funeral Service will be Tuesday, Dec. 16, at St. John's Greek Orthodox Church in Boardman, friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to St. John's Greek Orthodox Church Renovation Fund, 4955 Glenwood Ave., Boardman, OH 44512. May her memory be eternal.
