Betty Jane
Shutrump Hoyt
Dec 12, 1922 — Jun 12, 2011
Betty Jane Shutrump Hoyt YOUNGSTOWN - Betty Jane Shutrump Hoyt was born Dec. 21, 1922, in Youngstown, the fourth of 10 children of Fred and Helen Buchman Shutrump. A pivotal moment in her life occurred at age 12, when she survived being swept over Lanterman's Falls, sustaining a broken hip which created obstacles that led to the development of formidable inner strength in adversity. Betty graduated from the Villa Maria Academy before earning a degree from the KSU School of Journalism. She worked writing advertising copy in various jobs, a woman ahead of her time who relished the working world. Mrs. Hoyt's married life began in 1948 with her former husband, Robert E. Hoyt, who served as a White House Correspondent during the Kennedy years and later as a Canadian TV public affairs commentator, taking her to live in Akron, Washington D.C., Cambridge, Mass., Grosse Pointe, Mich., and Toronto, Canada, during which time their five children were born. Returning to Youngstown in 1967, Betty joined with Mollie Kessler as a co-founding and charter member of the Youngstown Area Association for Children with Learning Disabilities, which eventually engendered the Mollie Kessler School. Her work career at Wedgewood Apts. Inc., and Shutrump & Assoc. spanned decades, enabling her to use her diverse talents and great people skills while supporting her family. Besides her family, Betty's generously shared enthusiasm for life inspired many through her involvement in church renewal retreats (St. Christine's, Immaculate Heart of Mary, St. Luke's, St. Patricks, and St. Cecilia's in Pittsburgh). A passion for travel and a deep curiosity about people and places led her around the globe. Her active participation in life was unquenchable. At the age of 80, she became an asset to the Butler Institute Of American Art as an active docent, which brought her tremendous joy during her last years, enabling her to continue to be of service to her community while she was renewed and inspired by beauty. She also gave of her time helping at the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality. Betty's enthusiasm and perpetual encouragement will be missed by many, her son, Erich (Dr. Sarah Wedden), in Scotland; daughters, Gerard (John Petrison) and Victoria in Arizona, Karres Cvetkovich (Tom) in Youngstown; as well as her sisters, Louise Nuth and Carole Reardon (Jack); brother, Tom Shutrump (Jayne); her 12 grandchildren, (Moses, Magdalen, Jasmine, and Max Hoyt, all of Scotland, Morgana and Alexandra Petrison of Arizona, Socrates Wilson of Pittsburgh, Elena Cvetkovich of Youngstown, and Wolfgang and Amelia Rose Atteberry of Arizona); and numerous close cousins, nieces and nephews. A son, Douglass, died in 1996, an infant daughter in 1960, and six beloved brothers and sisters predeceased her. Betty and her close companion, Atty. Theodore Cubbison, shared great times and travels, greatly enriching the last decade of her life. Betty made her home in later years with her daughter, Karres, and the Cvetkovich family. Friends and family are invited to visit at the Fox Funeral Home on Thursday, June 16, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. The circle of earthly life will be completed at St. Patrick's Church, where she was both baptized and married, and where a Mass will be celebrated to honor her passage on Friday, June 17, at 11 a.m. Additional time for prayer and commemoration preceding the Mass (from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the church) will be with music by nephew, Zachary Miller and Fr. Vit Fiala. In lieu of flowers, please support needs in your community. Betty's favorites include Butler Art, Millcreek Children's Ctr., and Dorothy Day House of Hospitality. There will be calling hours Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fox Funeral Home in Boardman.
