Brother Luke Gilles Bedard., 73 Canfield - Bro. Luke Gilles Bedard SSP, 73, died at Caprice Health Care Center on May 11 after a prolonged illness following heart surgery. He was born of Noe and Berthe Bedard on September 26, 1932 in St. Vital de Lambton, in the province of Quebec, Canada. In 1953, he entered the Society of St. Paul, a congregation of priests and brothers in the Catholic Church dedicated to using the media in spreading the Gospel. He made his perpetual profession in 1963 in Staten Island New York. He was assigned to Queen of Apostles Seminary in Derby New York where he taught the seminarians book and pamphlet production. In 1968, he was transferred to the Society's community in Canfield where he worked in the circulation departments of the Catholic Home Messenger and Pastoral Life, two nationally distributed magazines. Up until his recent illness, he was a part of the audio-visual department of Alba House helping in the production of cassettes and CDs and taking care of the shipping. He also prepared and mailed campaigns for St. Anthony's Wayside Shrine. He was a greeter at the Society's televised Mass that is seen at 11am every Sunday on the Ecumenical Television Channel which is carried on many local cable networks. He possessed a generous spirit and his imaginative, positive outgoing personality was a delight to all who knew and worked with him. He loved the Society of St. Paul and constantly prayed for new men to enter the congregation as priests or brothers. The courage and the tranquility with which he faced the suffering of his last 10 months of life were an inspiration to all. Survived by his sisters Jeannine Lapointe and Lucille Lauzon as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Clement Bedard, and his sister, Lise Breton.
