Catherine Wicks Cardwell, 90. POLAND A memorial service will be Sunday March 18 at 2 P.M. at Poland United Methodist Church for Catherine Wicks Cardwell, 90 of Poland who passed away Thursday March 1. Catherine , known by her friends as, Katy, was born July 5, 1921 in Slippery Rock, Pa., a daughter of Charles Huntley Smith and Katherine Minerva Wicks. She was a 1939 graduate of Slippery Rock High and State Teachers College-Youngstown. Also attended Business College. She moved from Youngstown to Poland in 1950. Katy retired from Bank One in 1984 after 17 years of employment as a Customer service Rep. at Poland branch. Katy was a member of Poland United Methodist Church for sixty years. Catherine served as past president of Women's Society of Christian Service & the United Methodist Women, various committies of the church and was part of the single group. Catherine was a charter member of Daphne Garden Club, Forum of Youngstown. She loved to bowl and had a set of 500. She was a skilled gardener, seamstress, knitter,card player and floral arranger. Her husband Gilbert Lee Cardwell whom she married December 31, 1943, passed away Dec 9, 1976. She leaves to cherish her memory three children Lee Gilbert(Colleen) Cardwell of Poland, Catherine "Kaye" Carol Szekel of Poland and Raymond George (Mary) Cardwell of Fairfax, Va., six grandchildren James Conzett, Yvonne Fain Blasko, Debbie Cardwell, Justin Fain, Annette Szekel and Kimberly Cardwell Elkins; and three great grandchildren Jimmy, Darius and Wendy. She will be missed by family and many friends- especially her card club ladies. Besides her husband , Catherine is preceded in death by her parents Katherine and step father, Raymond Grooms,a sister Norma Kennedy, a step daughter Esther Conzett, a son in law Victor Szekel and a grandson David Cardwell. There are no calling hours. Material tributes can be made in Catherine's memory to Poland United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 1940 Boardman-Poland Rd, Poland, Ohio 44514. Arrangements are by the Fox Funeral Home, Boardman.
