Charles B. Averell, 95 BOARDMAN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Gerald DeLucia at 1 p.m., Monday, at St. Charles Church, Boardman, for Charles B. Averell, 95, who passed away Tuesday afternoon, with his wife, Marion, and his children by his side. Charles, known to all as "Chuck," was born Oct. 14, 1919, in Pittsburgh, a son of Richard and Sarah Carlisle Averell. After his graduation from Oliver High School in Pittsburgh in 1937, he was employed as store manager for Gallenkamp Shoes in East Liverpool, and later became district manager of the Shoe Corporation of America. Charles and his family were members of St. Aloysius Church Parish in East Liverpool, where he was a member and past president of the East Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, and a member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 509. After he and his family moved to Boardman, Charles and Marion joined St. Charles Church Parish. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Poland Council 4471, and a past Faithful Navigator, as well as a Fourth Degree member of Cardinal Mercier Assembly 804. A Passing of the Sword ceremony will take place at 12:30 p.m., prior to the Mass on Monday. During World War II, Charles served as a staff sergeant in the 104th Infantry, 26th Division, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, receiving the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in Military action against an enemy of the United States in France on November 19, 1944. He would tell the story of his being in the lead truck of the counteroffensive during the battle, with orders to go forward until fired upon. He was a proud and devoted husband, father, son-in-law, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, and friend to all. He loved to make whimsical observations that put smiles on the faces of one and all, and he and these silly jokes will be remembered by everyone who knew him. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, the former Marion Pandolfo, whom he married July 27, 1946; and three sons, Charles L. Averell of Valley City, Arthur A. Averell of Boardman, and Richard J. (Mary Jo) Averell of Boardman. He also leaves six grandchildren, Brian (Karen) Averell, Megan Averell, Devin (Katrina) Averell, Kristen (Mike) Keating, Justin (Shannon) Averell, and Marah (Kyle) Larson; and 14 great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Elliot Averell, James Miller, Sean Averell, Constance, Lydia, Annalise and Andrew Keating, Ryder and Kallen Dye, Mary and Katherine Averell, Tyler Cronie, and Jack Larson. In addition, Charles leaves his sister-in-law, Barbara Averell; and the two Niece and Nephew , who were like sister and brother to him, Hazel Hertweck and Thomas R. Averell. Besides his parents, Charles was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Averell; five brothers, John (Hazel) (Gertrude), Richard (Hester), Henry (Hannah), George, and Robert Averell; and three sisters, infant Mary Averell, Agnes (Howard) Morse, and Sally (Howard) Tipping. Friends and family may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, at St. Charles Church, Boardman.
