YOUNGSTOWN--There will be services Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Dominic Church, for Charles R. Gray, Sr., 92, who died Saturday evening at St. Mary's Alzheimer's Center. Charles was born Jan. 25, 1913, in Sharon, PA, the fourth of six children of Elmer Donley Gray and Agnes Iris Regan. He was named after his grandfather, Charles Alexander Gray. The family lived in New Castle, PA and the west end of Mt. Lebanon areas of Pittsburgh. Charles graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1933 and then Washing and Jefferson College in Washington, PA in 1938, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. Charles joined Lever Brothers Company, a division of Unilever, with whom he was employed for more than 34 years, retiring in February of 1975. Charle met Barbara Allison Brown through the Dominic Club at St. Bernard Church in Pittsburgh, and they married July 5, 1941. The first son, Charles, Jr., was born in Washington, PA. They had two other sons, James and Robert, after their move to Youngstown in 1943. Both Charles and Barbara were active at St. Dominic Church throughout the rest of their lives. Charles was amember of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society. He was recognized for 25 years of service in the Youngstown Catholic Committee of Scouting, receiving a St. George ribbon and medal, and an honorary plaque from Bishop Malone. He was an avid golfer and bowler, and participated in many fund raising events for St. Dominic Church. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara in 1986. Charles is survived by a sister, Lovell Grady of Stocton, CA; sons, Charles of Waldorf, MD, James of Novato, CA and Robert of Youngstown; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to Saint Dominic Church, 77 E. Lucius Ave., Youngstown, OH 44507.
