Cleo James Chelekis Gorant,91 Cleo James Chelekis Gorant of Canfield, Ohio died Friday, June 22, 2012. She was born in Youngstown, Ohio on August 7, 1920, one of eight children of Anna and James Chelekis. She was preceded in death by Charles Constantine Gorant, her husband of 46 years and co-founder of Gorant Candies, and her daughter Marianne Charlene Gorant. She is survived by two daughters, Connie Gorant Fisher (Robert) and Denise Gorant Gliwa (Kevin), three grandchildren, Catherine Gorant Gliwa, Charles Gorant Gliwa and Samuel Robert Fisher, a sister Bess Canelos, and many nieces and nephews (and grand-nieces and nephews) who she loved like her own children. Although not technically related, Yolanta Juchno provided unsurpassed care and friendship to Cleo in her later years and Cleo loved her like family. Cleo is a graduate of South High School where she was involved in archery and in her senior year became the Ohio State Archery Champion. She received Bachelor of Science degree in education from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia and furthered her studies at Youngstown College and Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois. Cleo began her career as a high school history and biology teacher at Fredericksburg High School in Virginia. She had a long history of involvement with the Youngstown Y.W.C.A., beginning as a volunteer at Camp YOTA. Eventually, she rose to be Recreational Director of the camp. She also was Waterfront Director of Great Lakes Camp, a private camp for girls in Erie County, Pennsylvania. Cleo later served as Director of the Health Education Department at the Y.W.C.A., and was instrumental in helping to raise funds for the first Y.W.C.A. indoor pool in Youngstown. For a time, she was on staff at Youngstown College, where she coordinated girls' physical education classes. She was among the first in Youngstown to teach swimming to the blind and handicapped and also taught water safety instruction at the Chautauqua Institute in New York through the American Red Cross. A longtime Boardman resident, Cleo was a member of St. John Greek Orthodox Church where she taught Sunday School and actively participated in the Ladies Philoptochos. She also volunteered at the Butler Institute and the Youngstown Symphony Children's Concert Women's Committee. An avid golfer, she was a member of Tippecanoe Country Club and spent her winters in Marco Island, Florida where she was a member of the Classics Country Club. She traveled extensively and enjoyed following football (especially the Browns) and golf on television. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family who loved her dearly. Private services were held. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. John Greek Orthodox Church, 4955 Glenwood Ave., Boardman, OH 44512.
