Obituary

Donald "Pat" Ungar, 79, of Boardman, passed away peacefully at his residence on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, with his wife at his side. Donald was born on August 19, 1946, in Cleveland, the son of the late Alfred Paul and Dorothy M. McDonald. After graduating from Cardinal Mooney High School in 1964, Pat enlisted in the Marine Corp. where he obtained the rank of first Sergeant and was awarded the silver star, two bronze stars and various other honors.  Pat started his lifelong career in law enforcement working at the Port Royal Police Department in Beaufort, South Carolina, then moved to Youngstown, Ohio where he worked for the Mahoning County Sheriff's Dept., as the Director of Security for the Youngstown City Hall and Vector Security.  He was a member, lector, and volunteer in the soup kitchen at St. Dominic Church.  Pat enjoyed going to the shooting range, flying model airplanes, traveling with his wife, having family over for the holidays, going out to breakfast and dinners with friends, playing dominos on Friday nights and riding "Papa Smurf" his coveted motorcycle with the Retread Cycle Motorcycle Club. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife Ivana Luka-Ungar, whom he married on July 7, 2007, stepdaughters Ashley (Matt) Lister of Asheville, North Carolina, Heather (Jim) Adams of Brandon, Mississippi and Lori Luka-Wyrwas (Tony Wyrwas) of Avon, Ohio, stepson Christopher (Jessica) Luka of Reston, Virginia, grandchildren Brady Watson, Easton, Ruthie and Ruby Adams and special friends Mickey and Kevin.  Pat is preceded in death by his brother John Roy Ungar, granddaughter Emma Grace Watson and special friends Louie Amicarelli, and Phil and Bev Goings. Family and friends may call from 9 to 9:50 a.m. Saturday, October 11, 2025, at St. Dominic Church, 77 E. Lucius Ave. Youngstown, Ohio followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., celebrated by Rev. Frassati Davis, O.P. Material tributes can be made in Pat's memory to St. Dominic Church, 77 E. Lucius Ave., Youngstown, Ohio 44507 or to Hospice House Compassus, 9803 Sharrott Rd., Poland, Ohio 44514. His family wishes to thank Nurse Tonya and Pastor Carson of the Hospice House and the Veterans Outreach for their support and compassion during a difficult time. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Edward J. Fox & Sons Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. Boardman.
