Edwin J.
Huffman
Dec 22, 1927 — Aug 2, 2009
Edwin W. Huffman YOUNGSTOWN - Edwin W. Huffman departed this life to begin his final adventure on Aug. 2, 2009, following several years of failing health. He was born Dec. 22, 1927. After completing high school, he graduated from Youngstown University with a degree in education, specializing in Spanish. He spent two years in the U.S. Army, most of it in Germany, where he became fluent in this language and conversational in many others. Thus began his insatiable love of travel and exploration. He visited many countries worldwide and became an enthusiastic historian, fascinated by the varied cultures, customs, languages and ethnic developments of the places he saw. These pursuits fueled his love of collecting, especially stamps, unusual antiquities and coins, resulting in him being a nationally known collector, appraiser and expert on foreign monies. During the Kennedy Administration, Ed spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer, focused mainly in the Colombia, South American regions. There, he felt at home, among the simple customs and lifestyles of the people in the places he lived and worked. One of the many things he brought back with him was a love of cooking and of sharing meals with those he cared for and about. Upon completing his time with the Peace Corps, he went to work for U.S. Steel and continued there until retirement age when he could once again freely pursue his many interests and hobbies, always staying active, busy and involved. Ed was forever the number one "go-to" guy, no matter what the subject or question. When he left "us," he did so with a world of knowledge that will be irreplaceable to all who knew him. including a sister, Gail (Monte) Campbell; brother, Harry (Hap) Huffman; and a score of relatives and friends who will miss him dearly. A small one hour memorial service will be held Thursday, September 17, at the Edward J. Fox & Sons Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Youngstown, starting promptly at 2 p.m. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to Hospice of Western Reserve, whose kindness and caring were so much appreciated during Ed's final days.
