Obituary

Eugene R. Walega, 70 NEW MIDDLETOWN - Eugene R. Walega, 70, passed away suddenly at his residence on Wednesday evening, August 21, 2013. Gene was born January 17, 1943 in Youngstown, the youngest child of Jacob and Viola Zebracki Walega, and was a lifelong area resident. He attended St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish School in Youngstown where he served as an altar boy, and was a 1962 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He served as an MP in the Army National Guard from 1965 to 1971 and worked as an electrician/tester for 39 years at General Electric and Youngstown Service Shop, retiring in 2008. His beloved wife, the former Marjorie M. Duffy, whom he married October 17, 1970, passed away November 11, 2006. Gene was a veritable computer whiz who was known for his love of new technologies, gadgets and games. He was also an avid gardener; each and every summer, neighbors and friends looked forward to his prized peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes. He was a music lover, a talented photographer and photo/film editor, and a beleaguered but nonetheless devoted fan of the Cleveland Browns and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Immensely proud of his Polish heritage and deeply devoted to his family and his Catholic faith, he was a quiet, dignified and gentle person who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He was his happiest with a hot cup of McDonald's coffee in hand. He will be sorrowfully missed by those with whom he made his home: his daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Wade Doerr, his best buddy and granddaughter Pippa, and his dog Boojee. He will also be dearly missed by his beloved sister-in-law Nancy (Dale) Schneider of Austintown, several nieces and nephews, and countless online friends. He is also survived by a sister, Theresa Perrett of Struthers, and a brother, Raymond Walega of Youngstown, and was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Walega. Friends may call from 2 p.m.to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Fox Funeral Home in Youngstown. There will be services at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home and a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Stanislaus Church on Williamson Avenue in Youngstown. He will be laid to rest next to his wife at Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends may visit www.foxfuneralhome.org to view this obituary and send condolences.
