Father Victor Lorenzo Viberti, SSP, 93 died at 12:30 PM on Sunday, August 20,2006 at Richmond Carmel Nursing Home on Staten Island, New York.. Father Viberti was 68 years a Roman Catholic Priest and a member of the Society of St. Paul for 75 years. The Society specializes in the media ministry in 30 countries around the world and is made up of both priests and religious brothers. Fr. Viberti is survived by three sisters, Vittoria, Maddalena and Piera as well as many nieces and nephews all residing in Italy. He was bom Lorenzo Giovanni Viberti on August 6, 1913, in La Morra D'Alba, Italy. He entered the Society of St. Paul on April 10, 1926. He began his Novitiate on June 1, 1930 and made his first profession of vows on June 1, 1931. Fr. Victor was ordained a priest in the Cathedral of Alba, Italy on March 12, 1938. Father Viberti was editor of'Famiglia Cristiana" which would become Italy's largest weekly magazine of any kind and the largest Catholic magazine in the world. In 1939 he was transferred to the United States where he was the local superior from 1939 to 1946 at the Staten Island Community, m 1946, he founded the "Catholic Home Messenger" magazine in Canfield, Ohio, which became me sixth largest Catholic magazine in the United States with a circulation of 180,000. In 1952, he returned to Staten Island and became the editor of St. Paul Publications, which later became Alba House. He also founded "Pastoral Life" magazine with a circulation of 6,500 copies. In 1961, the magazine was moved to Canfield, Ohio where Fr. Viberti continued as its editor. In 1964, Fr. Victor became the Superior of the community in Dearborn, Michigan and the editor of the Society's weekly newspaper, "La Voce del Popolo ". From 1974 to 1980 Fr. Victor was the local Superior of the Canfield Community and in 1980 was named the Provincial Superior of the United States. After his 4-year term as Provincial, he returned to Staten Island and continued as Acquisition Editor of Alba House Publishing. In recent years Fr. Victor has been in failing health until the Lord called him home on the Feast of St. Bernard, the 92nd Anniversary of the Founding of the Society of St. Paul. In 1963, the Founder of the Society of St. Paul, Blessed James Alberione, on the occasion of Fr. Victor's 25th anniversary of Priesthood wrote: "You have spent your years in the Priesthood giving glory to God and bringing peace to all, after the example of Christ. The good you have accomplished is already at the gates of eternity and will follow you to your eternal reward." He possessed a vibrant outgoing personality and an absolute dedication to the apostolate and life of the Society of St. Paul. He is missed by all of his fellow priests, religious brothers and the countless people he served. Viewing will be at the Society of St. Paul (Alba House) Chapel in Staten Island New York on Tuesday, August 22nd from 1 PM to 8 PM. The Funeral Mass there will be on Wednesday, August 23rd at 10 AM, also in the Society of St. Paul Chapel. On Thursday, August 24th there will be calling hours at the Society of St. Paul Chapel in Canfield from 2 pm to 4pm and from 6pm till 8pm with a vigil service at 8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Paul Monastery in Canfield, Ohio on Friday, August 24th at 10AM followed by burial in the Society of St. Paul Cemetery also in Canfield, Ohio.
