Florence E.
Dailey
Jun 26, 1920 — Jan 14, 2015
Florence E. Dailey, 94 YOUNGSTOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Saturday, at St. Christine Church, celebrated by the Rev. John Keehner for Florence E. Dailey, 94, who passed away Wednesday morning. Florence was born June 26, 1920, in Youngstown, a daughter of Lawrence and Mary Catherine Thornton Lambing. She was a 1939 Niles McKinley High School graduate. Florence was a homemaker for her first 20 years of marriage. From 1961 until 1986, she worked as a teller for Mahoning National Bank in downtown Youngstown. Florence colored her hair green on St. Patrick's Day and customers looked forward to coming into the bank to see her. She then worked 14 years, from 1988 to 2002, at Inner Circle Pizza in Poland, where she made dough for 400 pizzas every day, retiring at the age of 81. Florence was instrumental in the establishment of St. Christine Church and School. In 1948, she and her husband, Joseph, volunteered to conduct a door-to-door survey of Catholic residents living in the new Kirkmere neighborhoods. They presented their survey findings to Bishop Emmet Walsh and asked him to establish a Catholic parish to serve the city's southwest side of town. She enjoyed baking, cooking, sewing, card clubs, square dancing, an occasional game of golf and has fished in Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Florence enjoyed sharing her recipes with friends and strangers and even the Youngstown Vindicator. She encouraged her children to engage in entrepreneurial spirit. She and her husband, Joseph, taught them to advertise and promote the sale of baked goods. Neighbors from the southwest side of town became satisfied buyers of her favorite pies, bread and cinnamon rolls for several years. Florence's mother died when she was six years old. She and her six siblings, Dorothy, a lifelong resident of Niles and the only surviving sibling, Mary, Agnes, Rita, Kathryn and Joseph, took on the task of helping their father put food on the table, and provide for a family of seven while at the same time teaching school plans and lessons of life, especially to the youngest of the children. Florence had to balance school with house chores, such as learning to cook, ironing cloths, washing floors and windows and babysitting. She had to quickly grow up and pitch in order for the family to survive. And indeed they did. Florence will always be loved by those who knew her. She shall be remembered for the good life she led. There was always one more plate of food for an unexpected visitor at dinner time. She is gone from this earth but she lives on within each of us. "We pray that mom watches over us all and keeps us safe from all harm." Her husband, Joseph E. Dailey, whom she married Oct. 11, 1941, passed away Sept. 29, 1987. She leaves to cherish her memory, her four children, John J. (Katie) Dailey of New Baltimore, Mich., Thomas L. (Marlene) Dailey of Youngstown, Mary Rita (Ken) Bodnar of Austintown and Michael (Kristin) Dailey of The Villages, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Michael, Colleen, Marleen, Kenny, Raechel, Joseph Michael, Jennifer, Mark, Brook and Jasmine; and 12 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband and five siblings, Florence is preceded in death by two grandchildren, Patrick and Mary Jane. The family wishes to give thanks and praise to the dedicated employees of the Inn at Christine Valley, Hospice of the Valley, St. Elizabeth Health Center's ER and eighth floor personnel, who were "so supportive and attentive to the needs of our dear mother. May God Bless you all." Friends may call today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman and from 9 to 9:45 a.m., Saturday, at St Christine Church. Material tributes can be made in Florence's memory to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Boardman, OH 44512.
