George Cataland, 86 ROCKVILLE, MD. - George Cataland passed away in his sleep on Sept. 30, at his home. He turned 86 just days before his passing. George was retired from the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C., where he conducted research in the area of temperature studies and cryogenics. He was a graduate of Youngstown State University and a sergeant in the U.S. Army, having served his country from 1951 through 1954, stationed in Fort Benning, Ga. George was born in Youngstown, the fourth child of Louis and Eugenia Cataland. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Cataland Talaganis of Poland; and brother Dr. Samuel Cataland of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his brother, Max Cataland of Columbus; and sister Helen Cataland Eldredge of Silver Springs, Md. George had seven nephews and one niece, Stanley, Louis and Eleftherios Cataland, Mark and Dean Talaganis, Louis and Spero Cataland, and Jeannette Cataland Simios. He had the honor of being a great-uncle to 11 great-nephews and great-nieces. George was a member of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Washington, D.C. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Washington, D.C., or St. John The Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church in Boardman. Father Thomas Constantine will preside over the funeral service, which will be held Monday, Oct. 12, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John The Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church, located at 4955 Glenwood Ave., Boardman. Family and friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church, prior to service. George will be interred with his family at Belmont Cemetery in Youngstown.
