Obituary

A Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Matthias Church for Helen E. Pochiro, 92, of Assumption Village in North Lima, formerly of Cornell Street in Youngstown. Born in 1913, a daughter of Thomas and Carmel (Demain) DelQuadri, she grew up on Albert Street and was a lifelong area resident. Mrs. Pochiro was elected and served for over 40 years as the precinct committeeman in Ward 7-V on Youngstown's south side. She was an active member of the Mahoning County Democrat Party, who went door to door campaigning and hosted "meet the candidates" parties at her home for many years. She was an excellent homemaker, seamstress and baker. She enjoyed her large family and helped raise most of her grandchildren and great grand children. Graduating from East High School in 1931, she was a member of the championship debating team and placed first in the Ohio State University competitive Biology and English exams. She was a founding member of the Parent Teacher Association at Bennett Elementary School and served as an officer of the Lansingville Ladies Political Club. She was a generous volunteer and officer of the St. Matthias Parish Infant Jesus of Prague Guild. She is survived by her son, Rocco T. Pochiro of Warren and daughters Joan C. Basta and her companion Howard Hellman of Baordman and Attorney Elaine Pochiro of Chicago and by a sister, Adeline "Dolly" Sauline. She was preceded in death by her sisters: Angeline Peluso, Mary DelQuadri, Loretta Kuzma and brothers: Patrick DelQuadri, Ralph DelQuadri and Anthony "Red" DelQuadri. She is survived by grandchildren: Diane (Chaparas) Rosario, whom she reared, Maria Chaparas, Lisa Miletta, Rana Esposito, Michele Wholf, and Michael Pochiro. She is also survived by 13 great grand children: Daina Rivera, Deidra, Delia and Louis Rosario; Joanna and Laurence Button; Lana Pochiro; Jessica, Daniel and Tyler Miletta; Nino Esposito and Demetrios and Nikos Chaparas and 6 great-great grandchildren: Brian and Nick Golec, Draia Rivera, Jason Williams Jr., Destina Smith and Deandra North. She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Mike Pochiro, prominent regional labor leader, her son Michael A. Pochiro and a granddaughter, Patricia(Chaparas) Button. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are by the Fox Funeral Home, Boardman.
