Helen S. vanGorder, 85, BAORDMAN--Funeral Services will be 9:15 A.M. Saturday at The Fox Funeral Home, Boardman and a 10 A.M. Saturday in St. Christine Church, Youngstown, for Helen S. vanGorder, 85 , who died Wednesday evening . Helen was born May 28, 1921 in Sykesville, PA, a daughter of George & Elizabeth Janico Slotta and moved to Youngstown in 1957. She graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor's and master's degrees in speech and English. She started her career in broadcasting in Sharon, PA, then went to Youngstown State University in 1957 as an assistant professor in the English Department, retiring in 1992. She was very involved with all of her students. She loved to travel, and met Pope John Paul II twice. On her last visit with the Pope she also met German Chancellor Ludwig Erhard. She was a member of the church and its Infant Jesus of Prague Guild. Her husband W. Sturgeon vanGorder, whom she married August 18, 1957, died Sept 22, 1999. Among others, she leaves a niece Eleanor (Clark) Bouch of McDonald, Ohio and several other nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother John Slotta and three sisters Mary Volansky, Anne Peters and Elizabeth Slotta. Friends may call Friday 4 to 7 at the funeral home.
