Obituary

Dr. J. Nicholas Gordon, 87, of Acworth, Georgia formerly of Youngstown, Ohio, entered into eternal life on April 12, 2012. "Nick" attended Minerva High School in Minerva, Ohio, where he graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1942. He was active in sports at Minerva. He then attended Mount Union College where he played Varsity basketball. He entered the Naval V-12 program at Dartmouth College, followed by Columbia University Midshipman School and U.S. Naval Communications School. After his naval duty he graduated in 1950 from Marquette University School of Medicine in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He ranked second in his class and was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, National Honor Society of Medicine. He was in family practice in Struthers, Ohio for 25 years. During this time he was very involved in Sports' Medicine where he served as team doctor for Cardinal Mooney High School from 1960 to 1976. During this tenure Mooney won City Series Championships, Steel Valley Championships and a AAA Ohio State Championship in 1973. In 1976 Nick relocated to Atlanta, Georgia where he served for 20 years as Director of Student Health and Team physician for all sports at Georgia Institute of Technology. While at Georgia Tech their football team won a National Championship in 2001; his enthusiasm for football, sports, hunting, fishing and photography were a source of life long interest and joy. Nick was born in Robertsville, Ohio the son of Paraschiva and Neculae Giunca. A brother, Dr. George Giunca and sister Anna predeceased Nick and he has one sister, Aurelia Maloney who lives in Phoenix, Arizona. He is survived by his wife Betty Anne Freidhoff Gordon of Acworth, Georgia and four children: Dr. Neil (Linda) Gordon of Cedartown, Georgia, Dr. Chrisanne Gordon of Columbus, Ohio, Patricia (Jerre) Patterson of Boardman, Ohio, Mary Gail Kavanaugh of Houston, Texas and two step children, Betsy Simons and Dr.Gregory (Amy) Simons of Marietta, Georgia, a sister-in-law Sister Elizabeth Anne Freidhoff OSU of Youngstown, Ohio, six grandchildren, Michael (Marie) Gordon, Colleen Patterson, Nicole Popovich, Allison Popovich, Paige Popovich, one stepgrandchild Megan Simons and one great granddaughter Elizabeth "Libby" Gordon and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Wednesday April 18th at St. Charles Catholic Church, Boardman, Ohio. A Mass of Christian burial will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. in the Church. A private interment will take place in Robertsville, Ohio. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley or the Ursuline Sisters, 4250 Shields Road, Canfield, Ohio 44406.
