DR. JAMES JOSEPH BERNY, M.D. BOARDMAN, OHIO - On Tuesday, November 19, 2013 James J. Berny went home to be with the Lord after passing away unexpectedly. Jim was born in New York, New York, on October 7, 1953, and raised there as well. He graduated from Xavier High School in New York City. He attended Virginia Military Institute and was a distinguished graduate with a degree in biology and chemistry. Jim then attended the Medical College of Virginia where he earned a Medical Doctorate in medicine. Upon graduating, he joined the United States Army and completed his residency in anesthesiology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Jim and his wife, Susan, met at Walter Reed and were married on July 17, 1982 at Memorial Chapel, Walter Reed Army Medical Center. During his time at Walter Reed, Jim was Assistant Chief of Cardiac Anesthesia. His career then led him to Youngstown, Ohio, where he practiced at Northside Medical Center for ten years. He then founded his own anesthesia corporation, Columbiana Anesthesiology Consultants, and was Chief of Anesthesia at East Liverpool City Hospital for ten years. Dr. Berny ended his career at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Hamot Hospital, in Erie, Pennsylvania. Dr. Berny was a board certified anesthesiologist, and was passionate about his career as a physician. He had made it his life's work to bring quality patient care to all of the people in the communities he served. He was truly selfless, putting his patients first throughout his entire career. Jim was a member of the American Board of Anesthesiology and the Virginia Military Institute Alumni Association. He enjoyed supporting the community through his love of medicine. Jim loved fishing and was a member of the Duquesne Hunting and Fishing Club. Jim will be greatly missed by all those that knew and loved him. He leaves his wife of thirty-one years, Susan; his daughters and spouses, Kathleen and Kevin Campopiano, Meghan and Richard Graham, Colleen Berny, and Lauren Berny; and grandchildren, Mason Campopiano and Olivia Graham. He also leaves his mother, Stella Berny, his brother and spouse, Robert and Janine Berny, and niece and nephew, Robert, Jr. and Jillian Berny. The family will receive visitors on November 24, 2013 from 2:00-6:00 PM at the Fox Funeral Home located at 4700 Market Street, Youngstown, Ohio 44512. Prayers for Jim will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, November 25, 2013 at Fox Funeral Home and his Resurrection Mass will be at 11 A.M. at St. Charles Borromeo Church under the direction of Reverend Philip E. Rogers. Jim will be laid to rest in New York City where he will join his father, Herman Berny, in peace. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Jim's name to the Virginia Military Institute Foundation, Post Office Box 932, Lexington, Virginia, 24450.
