John M.
"Scotty" Hay Jr
Jan 31, 1922 — Jan 15, 2012
John M. "Scotty" Hay Jr., 89 BOARDMAN - Funeral services will be officiated by the Rev. David Joachim at 11 a.m. Friday at the Fox Funeral Home, Boardman, for John M. "Scotty" Hay Jr., 89, who died early Sunday morning at Hampton Woods Health Care Center after a brief battle with lung cancer. Mr. Hay was born Jan. 31, 1922, in Edinburgh, Scotland, the only son of John M. B. and Margaret "Peg" Hay. They immigrated to the United States six years later and settled in Struthers. Scotty graduated from Struthers High School, where he was a varsity letterman in football in 1940. He enlisted in the Air Force during World War II, earning his U.S. citizenship in 1944 and an honorable discharge in 1946. Later that year, he married the former Patricia Ann Rousher and they soon moved to Boardman and raised two children there, Jack (Charlene) of Poland and Pam (Dan) George of Midland, Texas. Scotty and Pat remained married for 58 years before her death in 2004, and he continued to reside in the same house until his recent illness. John worked as a foreman for the General Fireproofing Co. of Youngstown before becoming a career salesman for MetLife in 1962, from which he eventually retired. He was a longtime member of the local Bears Club social/civic group, managing several of their youth baseball teams and directing their annual women's golf tournament. He also belonged to the Youngtowners Club and Sebring Country Club for many years and was a member of the Boardman Boosters, serving as president from 1968 to 1970. He was an avid golfer until late in his life, when he turned most of his attention to the progress of his five grandsons, Dan, Brian, and Greg George and John and Paul Hay, all of whom are college graduates today. He spent 10 years dutifully overseeing the care of his beloved wife, Pat, as she struggled with Alzheimer's disease, and he enjoyed the times spent with his friends and former colleagues at the Boulevard Tavern, Yankee Kitchen, and the recently closed Dunkin Donuts store on Market Street. Besides his wife and parents, John was preceded in death by an infant daughter, MaryAnn; a stillborn son; as well as all his close knit in-laws, George and Betty Rousher and Jim and Bea Rousher. His two children and their spouses; five grandsons, extended family of nieces and nephews; and all who knew Scotty will dearly miss this generous and caring man. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Fox Funeral Home, Boardman. Material tributes can be made in Scotty's memory to the American Cancer Society, Mahoning County Chapter, 525 North Broad St., Canfield, OH 44406.
