John D.
Sinclair
Oct 21, 1936 — Jan 28, 2015
John D. Sinclair, 78 BOARDMAN - Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, concelebrated by the Rev. Gregory Maturi and the Rev. Tim O'Neill, at 10 a.m. at St. Dominic's Church in Youngstown, for John D. Sinclair, 78, who died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, following a brief illness, on Jan. 28, 2015. Born Oct. 21, 1936, in Youngstown, he was a son of the late Charles and Mary (Hillhouse) Sinclair. John graduated from South High School in 1954, where he garnered All-City Series honors as a basketball player. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1956. John married Edith A. Stiffler on July 30, 1960, the beginning of 54 loving years of marriage. John was a printer for The Vindicator for 42 years. He also officiated high school football and basketball games for over 25 years. Always sports oriented, he coached his children's little league teams, taught them to play tennis and was a handball champion at the Youngstown YMCA. In recent years, he exercised at the Davis YMCA and at Creekside Fitness Center, where he was affectionately known as the "Mayor of Creekside." If he was not hitting 11 three-pointers in a row on the court at Creekside, he could be found holding court at the Blue Wolf. John loved life, cherished his friendships, and never had an unkind word for anyone. John took great pleasure in following the athletic accomplishments of his grandchildren. He continued to follow high school football throughout the state with his Friday night football gang, but never on Saturday, as that night was reserved for date night with "Edie," the love of his life. John loved his family and in return he was much loved. John is survived by his beloved wife, Edie; his loving children, John F. (Simone) Sinclair, Jill Mettille (Newland), and Charles (Mary) Sinclair of Canfield; and eight grandchildren, Jeffrey Sinclair, Tyler Mettille, Mack Mettille, Alexis Mettille, Teresa Sinclair, Charles Sinclair, Marcella Sinclair, and Nicholas Sinclair. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Sinclair and sister Elizabeth Ford. Family and friends will be received on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. at the Fox Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman.
