POlAND- John W. "Jack" Palma, 63 There will be prayers at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Fox Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Edward Noga at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Church for John W. "Jack" Palma, 63, who passed away Wednesday afternoon at the Cleveland Clinic. Jack was born October 21, 1947, in Youngstown, a son of Robert and Mary Helen McBride Palma. He attended St. Patrick's School and graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School with the Class of 1965. He attended Youngstown College and played football for Dike Beede. Jack served in the Air Force during Vietnam from November 27, 1967 to May 26, 1971 where he was part of the 5th Tactical Control Group and the 608th Tactical Control Squad stationed at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. Like his father Jack became a Youngstown Police Officer on March 1, 1973. He became commander of the Special Investigations Unit in January 1984. He also served as a detective/Street Sargent, Homicide detective, and his last years on the department he served as the head of education and training which assisted other officers in receiving certification. He retired from the Youngstown police Department in April of 2006 after 33 years of service. Most of his hobbies were repairing the home and watching football, he enjoyed coaching his sons and attending games of anyone in the family. He will be sadly missed by his wife Jan Mills whom he married on December 2, 1983 at St. Dominic's Church. Also by his sons Robert Palma of Andover, Patrick Palma of Poland; a daughter Kelly Palma of Dayton; his mother Mary Helen Palma of Youngstown; a brother Atty. Robert Palma of Canfield and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Besides his father he was preceded in death by a brother James E. Palma. Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Fox Funeral Home.
