Obituary

ATTY. JOSEPH E. "JOACHIM" VOUROS, 86 YOUNGSTOWN--Joseph E. Vouros, 86, prominent attorney and community leader, died on Saturday morning at Park Vista Retirement Community. Atty. Vouros, or "Kimmey", as his family and friends knew him, son of Michael and Pascalia Kavatas Vouros, was born August 28, 1922 in Youngstown, Ohio and was a lifelong area resident. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, Martha and George Palikaras, when his mother and father died while he was an infant. He attended the Youngstown Public Schools, graduating from East High School in 1941 as the salutatorian of his class and a member of the National Honor Society. While a student at Youngstown State University, Atty. Vouros interrupted his college studies to enlist in the U.S. Army in 1941. After being discharged from the U.S. Army, he enrolled at Youngstown State University where he earned a bachelor of science in education degree, a bachelor of arts in business administration degree, and a juris doctorate degree. He also attended Ohio State University College of Law, and did post-graduate study at Northwestern University School of Law and Ohio State University College of Law. Prior to being admitted to the practice of law, Atty. Vouros was a teacher and football coach at North High School in Youngstown. He was also a teacher, football and basketball coach at Waynesburg High School, Waynesburg, Ohio, and a teacher and basketball coach at Rome High School, Rome, Ohio. Atty. Vouros was admitted to the practice of law before the Ohio Supreme Court on August 24, 1950. He was also admitted to practice law before the United States Supreme Court; the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio; the United States Department of Justice; Board of Immigration; and the United States Treasury Department. Atty. Vouros practiced law for 57 years. Known for integrity and professionalism, he concentrated in the areas of business law and corporation law. He was a partner in the law firm of Vouros, Nybell & Battisti. Later, he became a partner in the law firm of Brennan, Frederick, Vouros & Black, which is now known as the law firm of DeGenova, Frederick, Vouros & Yarwood, Ltd. Atty. Vouros will be remembered for his successful defense in representing the Youngstown Board of Education in the historic and landmark case of Alexander v. Youngstown Board of Education. 454 F Supp. 965 (1974). He will also be remembered for the case of Fraternity Order of Police, Youngstown Lodge No. 28, et al. vs. Hunter, Mayor, et al. regarding the constitutional question as to whether a municipality can require its employees to be residents of said city, which case was first heard before the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, 303 N.E.2d 103, then before the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Appellate Judicial District, 49 Ohio App.2d 185; before the Ohio Supreme Court, and finally, before the Supreme Court of the United States. Atty. Vouros was a life member of the American Bar Association. He was also a life member of the Ohio State Bar Association, serving as a member on its American Citizenship Committee. He was also a life member of the Mahoning County Bar Association, serving as Secretary of its County Courts Committee; as Chairman of its Blood Bank Committee; and as Chairman of its Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee. He was also a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association and of the American Judiciary Society. Atty. Vouros was also an active participant in many organizations including The American Legion, Youngstown Post 15, the Order of Ahepa, Lincoln Chapter 89, the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, Ohio Mu Chapter, the Youngstown University Alumni Association; Kiwanis International of Uptown Youngstown, and the Fonderlac Country Club, where he was a charter member and its Vice President. Atty. Vouros was a member of St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church, where he established the Lia N. Vouros Scholarship Fund, through the Youngstown State University Foundation for high school graduates of St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church to attend Youngstown State University. He was preceded in death by his parents, his aunt and uncle who raised him as their own child when he was 2 years old when his biological mother died, his wife, the former Lia N. Nomicos, whom he married on December 27, 1954 and died on June 21, 1984; and his cousin John Palikaras, who he loved and adored as his younger brother. He was survived by his nephew , John Phillip Palikaras, his wife Amy and their two children, Zachary and Camryn;his niece, Georgia Palikaras MacMaster and her husband, Frank; his adopted niece, Anne Frederick Crawford, her husband Scott and their two children, Scotty and Kara. He is also survived by his godchildren, Marlene Kay Senanefes, Constance Kim Gorant Fisher, Peggy Ambeliotis Giourgalis, Sophia Kim Leventis and Deno Kim Frangopoulos. Calling hours will be Monday from 5 to 8 pm. at the Fox Funeral Home, 4700 Market Street, Boardman and from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday in church. Burial will be at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Boardman. There will be services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church, 4955 Glenwood Avenue, Boardman, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that monetary contributions may be sent to the Lia N. Vouros Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o The Youngstown State University Foundation, 606 Wick Avenue, Youngstown, Ohio 44502 or to the Restoration Fund of St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church, 4955 Glenwood Avenue, Youngstown, Ohio 44512.
