Obituary

BOARDMAN - Joseph F. "Joe" Lyden Jr., 88, formerly of Poland, died peacefully on March 4. He was born on January 16, 1925 in Columbus, Ohio, the eldest son of Dr. Joseph F. and Dorothea Miller Lyden. He attended the Ursuline Academy and graduated from Ursuline High School in 1942. After attending the University of Detroit, he enrolled in the U. S. Navy V-12 Program, graduating from The University of Illinois with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Joe served as an engineering and deck officer aboard several ships and was honorably discharged from the Navy. He joined the engineering department of The McKay Machine Company, and rose through the ranks to become Assistant Vice President of Sales and Engineering for Tubular and Bar Machinery at Wean United Inc. and Vice President of the Mannesmann Demag Wean joint venture in Pittsburgh. His work took him to dozens of countries where he enjoyed seeing the sights, learning about local customs and meeting people, many of whom became lifelong friends. A devout Catholic, Joe was a longtime member of St. Patrick's Church in Youngstown, where he served on Parish Council, the parish finance committee and as a lector. He received The Spirit of ICS Award for his dedication to fundraising for Immaculate Conception School - his father's grade school, formerly on Youngstown's eastside. He was an avid golfer and board member at Tippecanoe Country Club, where he was a member since his early 20's. Above all, Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Martha E. Lyden (Ress) of Boardman; four daughters and one son, Martha (James) Neveu of Chagrin Falls, Diane of Mentor, Kathleen (Ronald) Bultema of Centerville, Joseph F. III (Kathleen) of Poland, Nancy (Glenn) Shortman of Hudson; sister, Dorothy (Howard) Hargate; 13 grandchildren, Julie (Joseph) Simon, Christina (Arthur) Zepf, Margaux Neveu, Jennifer and Suzanne Cake, Lauren Forbus, Joseph F. IV and Caitlin Lyden, Kathryn, Glenn Jr, Laura, Carolyn and Paul Shortman; three great-grandchildren, Claire and James Simon and Charlotte Zepf. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Miller Lyden and sister Marilyn Lyden Ress. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7 at Fox Funeral Home, 4700 Market Street, Boardman. On Friday, March 8, a prayer service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Fox Funeral Home, followed by an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Charles Borromeo Church, Boardman.
