Joseph E.
Mahoney
Jan 22, 1926 — Jun 20, 2007
Joseph E. Mahoney, 81 Cincinnati-Services will be 10:45 a.m. Monday at the Fox Funeral Home, Boardman and 11:30 a.m. in Saint Christine Church for Joseph E. Mahoney 81, formerly of Youngstown, who died peacefully on Wednesday June 20, after a long illness. Mr. Mahoney was born in Youngstown, January 22, 1926, a son of John Joseph Mahoney and Cecelia Scanlon McGinnis. His early years of education were spent in military academies in Georgia and Connecticut. He attended Scienceville High School beginning in his junior year; was a member of the football team and graduated in 1944. After graduation, Mr. Mahoney enlisted in the Navy and served as a Seaman 1st Class during World War II aboard the destroyer, the USS Kidd (DDG-661). On April 11, 1945, the ship was struck by a kamikaze plane while on radar picket duty off the eastern coast of Okinawa. Mr. Mahoney recounted the event for the Louisiana Naval War Memorial in Baton Rouge where the Kidd now sits as a memorial ship, describing it as "the most eerie and unnerving form of warfare mankind has ever inflicted on itself." His service in the navy became an integral part of his life; he was a lifetime member of the USS Kidd Association, attending numerous reunions with former shipmates and recounting his experiences for various publications. After the war Mr. Mahoney married the former Evelyn Welsh, also of Youngstown, in 1950, and graduated from Youngstown State University in 1952. The couple briefly lived in Cincinnati and returned to the Youngstown area where Mr. Mahoney worked for Servi-Clean Industries, retiring as sales manager in 1993. Mr. Mahoney, who enjoyed golf and skiing up until his illness two years ago, was also active in a number of local organizations including the Youngstown Rotary Club, where he was honored as a "Paul Harris Fellow," YSU Alumni Association; YSU Penguin Club, Mahoning Valley Industrial Management Association, the Mahoning Valley Gaelic Society and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. He served as Chairman of the YMCA membership committee for several years and was honored for his "outstanding and dedicated service," he was an usher for St. Christine's Church, and enjoyed his years of work as a member of his high school reunion committee. Mr. Mahoney also served as the Mahoning County Grand Jury Foreman and was a member of the Mahoning County Bar Association Foundation Committee. Mr. Mahoney is survived by three daughters, Jody ( who cared for him in her home), Patti, and Bridget ( fiancAC.' Bob Moskowitz), all of the Cincinnati area; two granddaughters, Mara and Julie Boak; a nephew, Michael Mahoney of California; an aunt, Sister Miriam Engles of Canfield; and his friend, Marilyn Boggs of Boardman. Mr. Mahoney was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Evelyn, and a brother, J. Richard Mahoney. Calling hours will be held on Sunday June, 24 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fox Funeral Home. The family asks that material donations be made to a Hospice Organization of the donor's choice.
