Joseph Patrick Walsh, 92 POLAND--Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at 1 p.m. at St. Dominic Church for Joseph Patrick Walsh of Poland, formerly of Youngstown. Mr. Walsh died peacefully Sunday, March 9, 2008 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, surrounded by his loving family after a short illness. He would have turned 93 on April 7. He loved his family, ice cream and newspapers. During his early retirement years, he was an avid golfer who twice made a hole in one. Mr. Walsh was born at home in Youngstown in 1915, the first child of Martin Paul and Jane Walsh. He graduated from St. Edward's School, Rayen High School, and the Ohio State University. He also attended Xavier University and received a certificate from New York University for meteorology. He was a World War II veteran, serving with the 5th Air Force, 1st Fighter Control Squadron, from 1943 through 1946 as a meteorologist and air traffic controller. He was deployed to the South Pacific, attaining the rank of captain. He married the love of his life, Margaret Mary Smith, on Sept. 29, 1945. She predeceased him on Jan. 28, 2005 after 59 happy years of marriage. A registered professional engineer, Mr. Walsh worked for Salem Engineering after leaving the military. In 1949, he joined Sharon Steel Corp., where he spent the remainder of his professional career, rising to the positions of Superintendent of Utilities and Director of Environmental Control before his retirement in 1982. His memberships included volunteering for SCORE(the Service Corps of Retired Executives) and as a volunteer mechanical drawing teacher at St. Dominic's School. He was a member of St. Dominic Church, the American Iron and Steel Institute, the Chesterton Club. He was a disabled veteran. Mr. Walsh is survived by his very dear sister, Rose Anne Evans of Lancaster, Calif. His brother, M. Paul Walsh, predeceased him. Mr. Walsh is also leaves his six children: Marie (Larry) Dean of Damascus, Maryland; Peter (the late Karen) Walsh of Hubbard; Anne (Rich) Fogoros of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.; Mark (Amy) Walsh of Alexandria, Va; Ellin (Joe) Murray of Hudson; and Jane Walsh of Poland, his loving and dedicated caregiver for the last three years; 12 grandchildren, Jonathan (Allyson) Dean, Michelle (David) DePinho, Michael Walsh, Megan Walsh, Sarah Walsh, Emily Fogoros, Joe Fogoros, Irene Walsh, Lucy Walsh, Grace Murray, Patrick Murray and Mary Kate Murray; and six great-grandchildren; Luke DePinho, Rosemary Dean, Laura DePinho, Owen Dean, Joseph Dean and Anna DePinho; his beloved sister-in-law, Ellin Boyd of Huntington, New York; and many loving nieces and nephews. Arrangements are being handled by the Fox Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., where calling hours will be conducted Tuesday, March 11, 2008, from 5 to 8 p.m. Friends may also pay their respects from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, at Fox Funeral Home, prior to the funeral Mass at St. Dominic. Memorial donations may be made to SCORE Chapter 112, Youngstown State University, 306 Williamson Hall, Youngstown, Ohio 44555.
