Obituary

JUDITH ANN DUFFEY BIRKHOLZ, 67 BOARDMAN - Services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Fox Funeral Home for Judith Ann Duffey Birkholz, loving wife, mother and nana who died Friday evening at her home. Judi was born September 24, 1938 in Youngstown, the seventh child of Lee and Pearl Duffey of Loveland Ave. After graduating from Wilson High School in 1956, she worked at WKBN Television and joined the U.S. Foreign Services in 1960. She served her country as a civil servant at the U.S. Embassy in Taipei, Taiwan until 1963. She and Larry were engaged in Italy and later married at Saint Nicholas Catholic Church in Struthers on December 14, 1963. They lived in Youngstown, Akron, and North Canton before moving to Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1980. Judi worked for 18 A½ years in the credit Department at Volvo Penta North America in Chesapeake, Virginia before her retirement in 2002. She greatly enjoyed reading, movies, history and traveling across America with Larry in their RV, and spending time with her beloved family. She traveled widely, visiting London, Rome, Hong Kong, Venice, and Athens. She visited all five great lakes, the Pacific, the Atlantic, and the South China Sea; the Mississippi, the Thames, the Tiber and the Rio Grand. But Returning to Youngstown was her dream for a long and happy retirement. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Lawrence C. Birkholz, son Eric and wife Rosemary of Charlottesville, Virginia and daughter, Dana Whitney and husband Lowell of Florence, Montana. She adored three grandchildren, Rachel Duffey Birkholz of Charlottesville, Alison Judith Whitney and Carter David Whitney of Florence. She will be missed and loved by her numerous friends and large family, including her sister, Marjorie "Duffey" Bitterman, her brother-in-law, John "Jack" Bitterman of Struthers, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Thelma Martin, Mary Madelene Osgood and Delphine Schrank and two brothers, Gordon Duffey and Robert Duffey. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, OH 44512.
