Margaret Dolores Wayman Drummond passed away peacefully on Monday October 19, 2026, she was born on September 15, 1935, in Jefferson, Ohio, to Nicholas William Wayman and Catherine Holleran Wayman. She was the eldest of their three children.
After graduating from Ashtabula High School, Margaret attended St. Elizabeth School of Nursing, where she began her nursing career in labor and delivery. Driven by a lifelong commitment to learning and teaching, she continued her education at Boston College, earning her bachelor’s degree in nursing before returning to St. Elizabeth’s as an instructor. She later earned a degree in education and counseling from Kent State University.
Margaret’s dedication to nursing education led her to serve as faculty member and Assistant Director of the School of Nursing until 1980, when she became Executive Director of the Mahoning Shenango Area Health Education Network (AHEC). She served in that leadership role for seven years, advancing educational opportunities and strengthening healthcare initiatives throughout the region.
Following her tenure at AHEC, Margaret joined Dr. Richard Barr in radiological research, where she led his research team as lead nurse. A teacher at heart, she continued to share her knowledge and passion for nursing throughout her career, ultimately retiring from La Roche University as a Professor of Nursing. There, she taught in the Nurse Anesthesia program and received a cherished departmental Award of Excellence in recognition of her contributions.
Margaret’s commitment to service extended well beyond her professional life. She volunteered with numerous organizations and initiatives that allowed her to put her nursing expertise to work while making a meaningful difference in her community. She supported the Parish Nurse Programs at the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Youngstown and St. Paul’s Church in Salem. She also served with the Ellsworth Fire Department Fire Corps, where she was instrumental in securing a grant for a new ladder truck. In a fitting tribute to her dedication and impact, the truck was affectionately named Miss Margaret.
Throughout her life, Margaret was a devoted nurse, educator, mentor, and community volunteer. Her career reflected a deep belief in the power of education, the importance of compassionate care, and the value of giving back. Whether in the classroom, the research setting, or her community, she left a lasting impression through her knowledge, leadership, and unwavering commitment to others.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, John Paul “Jack” Drummond, whom she married on August 19, 1961; her brother, John Wayman; and many cherished in-laws and friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Maureen (David Scannell) Drummond; her son, David (Tamara) Drummond; and her beloved grandson, John David (Monica) Drummond.
Margaret’s legacy lives on through the lives she touched, the nurses she taught and mentored, the communities she served, and the family she loved. Her life was one of service, lifelong learning, and meaningful contributions to others—a legacy that will be remembered with gratitude and affection.
The family would like to thank the visiting Angels of Salem and trustworthy Angels Katie, Pat, Lea, Penny, Janet, Jenny and Courtney. You all brought so much joy to her final year of life. We appreciate the wonderful care you provided to Margaret.
