There will be prayers at 9:15 AM at the Fox Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Zachary Coulter at St. Christine Church on Tuesday at 10AM for Margaret Jane "Peg" Saunders,98, who passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon with her family by her side.
Peg was born on November 9, 1919 in Youngstown to William Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (Whalen) Thompson. She attended Immaculate Conception and St. Dominic Schools and graduated from South High School. After graduating, she was a telephone operator for the Pennsylvania Railroad where she met her husband, John P. "Jack" Saunders. They were married on June 7, 1947. Jack passed away on March 24, 2013.
Peg was a dedicated member of St. Christine Church, and was a member of their bowling team and was the biggest Cleveland Indians fan ever. Peg was also known to have prayed the Rosary every day.
Peg will be deeply missed by her children; Mary Beth Brooks of Canfield, Margene Foster of Reno, NV, Jack Saunders of Columbus and Michael Saunders of Youngstown with whom she made her home until two years ago. She also leaves one brother, James (Joanne) Thompson of Yorktown, IN, and many nieces and nephews. Most of all, Peg will be remembered by her five grandchildren; Brandy (Jim) Hynes of California, Jennifer (Sean) Mulryan, Courtney (Robert) Lind, Brent (Jill) Saunders of Columbus and Ashleigh Foster of Reno, NV and eleven great grandchildren; Brodie, Maggie, Bailey, Breaker, Ramsey, Sailor and Meadow Hynes of California, Ian and Keeley Mulryan and Macey and Molly Lind of Columbus.
Peg's greatest joy was her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will always be remembered for having fresh baked brownies and chocolate chip cookies ready for her family. Her kids and grandkids loved their Grandma Peg and feel blessed to have had her for so long.
Besides her parents and her husband, Jack, Peg was preceded in death by her grandson, Barry E. Brooks Jr., her daughter-in-law, Kathleen Saunders, her sister, Mary Agnes" Sis" Wardle, and her brothers, John, Maurice, William, Donald and Alfred.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 PM Monday at the Fox Funeral Home, 4700 Market Street.
Peg's family would like to thank Assumption Village for their loving care during the last two years.
