Martha Gessner James, 87 Known as Marty to her friends, Martha Gessner James died on August 3,2011. She was born in Youngstown, Ohio on October 11, 1923 and lived in this area most of her life. Marty was the daughter of Judge George H. and Ruth Robison Gessner. She graduated from South High School in 1941, attended Women's College in Greenville, North Carolina and Ohio State University. Marty married Lieutenant William T. James II at the chapel on the United States Marine Corps base at Quantico, Virginia on January 22, 1944. Marty and Bill shared 67 wonderful years of married life together. Marty is survived by three children, William T. James II and his wife Debbie who live in Beaver Falls, Pa, Rev. Dr. Peter G. James and his wife Chris who reside in Vienna, Va and Molly Ohsner and her husband Ron who live in Columbus, Ohio. Marty cherished her six grandchildren, William T, James IV, Betsy James, Andrew James, Emily O'Connor, John Ohsner and Kelly Davie as well as four great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister-in- law, Evelyn Gessner and a brother-in-law, C. Gilbert James. Her brother Attorney John F. Gessner, twin sister Margaret Erickson, sister-in-law Addie Wick James and brother-in-law Walter Erickson preceded her in death. Marty served on numerous boards and area organizations such as the Child Guidance Center (founding member), Paisley House and the Junior League of Youngstown. She was a long time member of the Canfield Presbyterian Church and the Delta Gamma Sorority. Marty enjoyed playing bridge, golf, tennis, gardening, and sharing time with family and friends. In later years Marty enjoyed spending the winter months with Bill in Naples, Fla. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 10, at 2:00PM at the Canfield Presbyterian Church. In lieu of followers, contributions can be made to a memorial fund in Marty's honor to the Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main Street in Canfield, OH, 44406. Arrangements have been handled by Fox Funeral Home.
