Martha Philomena Villani, 86 TWINSBURG--Heaven welcomed Martha Philomena Mormile Villani who died at 5:15 a.m. April 3, of respiratory failure, a complication of a stroke in March, at Legacy Place, Center for Assisted Living, Twinsburg, Ohio. Martha was born in Smoky Hollow, Youngstown, on November 11, 1921, a daughter of Nicola (Nicholas) Mormile, who had emigrated to Youngstown from Vastogiradi, Italy and Beata Marie Diorio Zarlengo Mormile, who came to Youngstown from Pietrabondante, Italy. Martha leaves her husband, Frank Paul Villani, 96, a retired developer and contractor, at Legacy Place in Twinsburg, where he resides. She is sadly missed by her five sons, James, Richard (Claudia), Robert (Tarie), Thomas, and Gerald. She leaves also two granddaughters, Lynn and Melissa Villani; two grandsons, Michael and Nicholas Villani; nieces Linda Zarlengo of Dublin, Ohio and Tisha Parillo (Greg) Szweda of Kent; nephews, Jack (Diane) Parillo and Bill (Amy) Parillo of Austintown, and Al Zarlengo of Boulder, Colorado; and a cousin, Tonino Di Iorio of Rome, Italy. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Alfred Zarlengo; and her sisters, Rose Brown, Frances Zarlengo, and Jean Parillo. Martha Villani was a homemaker and an accomplished cook and baker. Her hobbies included gardening, bowling, bridge, sewing, painting, ceramics, and square dancing. She was a longtime member of the Junior Vivace Club of Youngstown, an association of Italian girls founded in 1933; bowled in various leagues in Boardman and Youngstown; served as a den mother for the St. Charles Cub Scouts; served on the board of directors for Big Brothers," Youngstown chapter; was in the Home & School Association at St. Charles Elementary School; and was a make-up assistant for the Youngstown Playhouse. With her family, Martha Mormile (Villani) moved to Boardman from Youngstown in 1936. She attended Boardman High School for three years, when her family moved again, to Glendale, California. Martha Mormile graduated from Glendale High School on June 19, 1942. After high school, the family came back to Youngstown, and Martha Mormile took employment as a sales clerk at Sear's Roebuck & Co. in downtown Youngstown. On August 12, 1943, Martha enlisted in the U.S. Naval Service. She was stationed at the U.S. Navy Air Station in Pensacola, Florida, after completing service school training in Bronx, New York and Milledgeville, Georgia. She worked at the naval air base as Storekeeper. She served in the Navy for three years, was honorably discharged on February 8, 1946, and returned to her family home on West Blvd., Boardman. Martha Mormile married her husband, Frank Paul Villani on June 21, 1947, in the original St. Charles Parish on the corner of Market Street and Route 224. The couple built a home on Brookwood Road in Boardman, where they resided for 51 years. They were members of St. Charles Parish from 1947 to 1998, and more recently were members of Sts. Cosmos and Damian Parish in Twinsburg, Ohio. Martha and her cooking was a glue that held a family together. Her tomato sauce was widely applauded, and she usually served spaghetti twice a week, on Thursday and Sunday. She made homemade spaghetti, lasagna, ravioli, and cavetelli. Other specialties included bracciola, roast leg of lamb, turkey, stew, pot roast, scalloped potatoes, Spanish rice, waffles, pizelles, mountain biscuits, and Easter bread. Mrs. Villani, as homemaker, put a home-cooked meal on the table every night of the week. Services for Mrs. Villani will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Edward J. Fox & Sons Funeral Home, 4700 Market Street, Boardman. A public viewing will be held on Sunday, April 6, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Villani will be cremated and her ashes will be interred at Calvary Cemetery. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Charles Parish in Boardman at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, April 9.
