Martin J. Joyce Sr.,85 CINCINNATI-Prayers will begin at 9:15 A.M. Monday at the Fox Funeral Home, Boardman followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Msgr. David Rhodes at 10 A.M. at St. Christine Church for Martin J. Joyce, Sr., of Cincinnati, formerly of Michael Drive. He was born on March 15, 1926, in Youngstown, a son of Martin E. and Mary Healey Joyce and was a longtime area resident. Marty was a 1944 graduate of Ursuline High School, where he was captain of the football team and elected to the All City Team and the Ursuline High School hall of Fame. He then graduated from Youngstown College in 1950. Mr. Joyce worked for Republic Steel Corporation in the open hearth division, for Bucheit Construction Company, and also sold real estate. He was a charter member of Saint Christine Parish where he was a member of Parish Council and the Holy Name Society. He and his wife both worked the church festivals in early years of the parish. Marty managed and coached in the Mill Creek Jr. Baseball League for over 30 years with the Kirby Sweepers team, was one of the coaches of many tournament teams and was a trustee for the league. He was responsible for the starting the Girl's Pigtail League and was instrumental in lights being constructed at the Mill Creek Jr. League Fields. He was a member of the Chesterton Club, Construction Union #1331 and Labor Union #125. Marty was a sergeant in the US Army from 1944 to 1946 with General Patton in the 3rd Army Infantry, having received a Bronze Star, a Combat Infantry Badge, and three battle stars; Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was also a member of the 101st Infantry Football team. He married his wife, the former Anne Conaboy, on February 7, 1948 at Sacred Heart Church. He has five sons, Martin J. (Mary Jo) Joyce, Jr., of Chicago, IL., Michael E. (Cathy) Joyce of Sarasota, FL., Timothy J. (Laurlie) Joyce of Lake Oswego, OR, John B. (Mary Jo) Joyce of Mentor, OH, and Brian J. (Kimberly) Joyce of Noblesville, IN; four daughters; Nancy L. (Emil) Petrillo of Centerville, OH, Bridget J. (Carmine) Montana of Concord Township, OH, Anne J. (Joseph) Chance of Franklin, TN, and Mary Kate (Jeff) Thesing of Cincinnati, OH; a sister, Elaine Lagergren of Boardman; nineteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne, and a son, Patrick M. Joyce. Donations in lieu of flowers should be made to Saint Christine Parish, 3165 S. Schenley Avenue, Youngstown, OH 44511, or The Lodge Care Center, 9370 Union Cemetery Road, Loveland, OH 45140 in Marty's name.
