Obituary

Youngstown- Mary Eleanor Murphy Chiasson, 88, died peacefully on May 11, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Mrs. Chiasson was born in Rutland, Vermont in 1927, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip J. Murphy. She graduated from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Montreal, Quebec, Canada where she met her future husband, Dr. Simon W. Chiasson. They moved from Vanguard, Saskatchewan to Youngstown in 1953. Mary was an avid skier and tennis player and spent many happy hours in her garden. She was engaged in numerous volunteer activities and served as a long time docent at The Butler Institute of American Art. She especially enjoyed leading tours for school children visiting the Museum for the first time. Mary is survived by two of her three children; Mary Ann (Gerd) Grieninger of New York, NY and James P. (Pamela) of Burlington, VT and four granddaughters; Cristine and Sabrina Chiasson, Marina Sharpe, and Barbara Grieninger. She was preceded in death by her husband; Simon W. Chiasson in 2006; and her son, John Philip (Jack) in 1977. She is also survived by her brother, Philip (Sally) Murphy of Canton, GA; her sisters, Martha McDevitt of Litchfield, CT and Elizabeth Sabella of Ridgefield, CT; and many nieces and nephews. The family thanks the caring staff and her many friends at the Commons at Greenbriar where she made her home for the past 5 years. It was her wish that memorial contributions be directed to The Butler Institute of America Art. There will be a memorial service for Mary this summer in Litchfield, CT.
