Norman J.
Dixon
Jan 8, 1921 — Mar 30, 2010
Boardman-Norman J. Dixon, 89. Prayers will be 9:30 A.M. Tuesday at the Fox Funeral Home, Boardman, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Msgr. David Rhodes at 10 A.M. at St. Christine Church in Youngstown for Norman J. Dixon, 89 who passed away Tuesday March 30. Norman was born January 8, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan. A son of Leo J. & Ann Murphy Dixon. Soon after his birth, the family consisting of five siblings moved to the Youngstown area where Norman resided for the rest of his life. The name Norman (in ancient English) means "strong" and strong is the perfect description of how Norman lived his life. Norman attended St. Patrick's School and graduated from South High School in 1939. Norman then attended Duke University in Durham North Carolina where he played varsity football as both an offensive and defensive end. Norman volunteered for service in the Army during WWII and saw action in the European theater where he was awarded the Bronze Star. After returning home from the war Norman attended John Carroll University in Cleveland where he also played football. Norman met the love of his life, Margaret "Peg" McFarland whom he married 1947, passed away in 1985. They had one son John J. (Phyllis) Dixon . He also leaves a brother Donald (Katherine) Dixon and a grandson John Connor (Jennifer) Dixon, who are expecting Norman's first great grandchild. Norman leaves his grand dog "Dixie", besides his wife Norman is preceded in death by a sister Lucille McAtee and two brothers Leo & Joseph Dixon. Norman joined the family business , in background music and several small radio stations, WSOM in Salem, WBOY in New Castle, Penna and a station in Clarksburg, W. Virginia. He was a avid golfer most of his life, but after his wife's death he became even more involved in golf and played frequently up to his death. He never lost his love for football and his favorite teams, Notre Dame, Ohio State and the Cleveland Browns. Norman's life was a fine example of the fact that "No one need be defeated by adverse circumstances that hard work and perserverence will inevitably bleed to success in life and that no one need feel old if one stands up and embraces adversity" For his family and friends that he leaves behind, he will be missed beyond what mere words can describe. Friends may call 5 to 8 Monday at the Fox Funeral Home, Boardman.
