Shirley M. Gronvall, 86 Shirley M. Gronvall passed away peacefully at 3:40 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at Sunrise of Poland Assisted Living Center. Shirley was born on October 31, 1920 in Covington, Kentucky, a daughter of James and Lillian Salter Maxie. She worked for Delta Airlines during World War Two, then later as a model for Federated Department Stores, in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she met her husband, Fred. While living in Cincinnati, Shirley had two sons, Fred Jr., and John. The family moved to Youngstown, Ohio in 1967 when her husband Fred, joined Strouss Department Stores. Shirley was very active in many community organizations including The Butler Institute of Art, The Youngstown Symphony, The Youngstown Playhouse and The Arms Museum. Shirley's true passion was traveling, where she enjoyed the history and culture of many countries. While at home, Shirley enjoyed reading, playing bridge, entertaining family and friends. She is survived by her son Fred, of Hamilton Ohio, his wife Lori and their two daughters, Olivia and Amelia, both 7, her son John, of Boardman, Ohio, his wife Beverly and their three children,, Jonathan (19), Lauren (17), and Rachel (15); her niece Diane Viti and her husband Vince of Cave Creek, Arizona, and nephew Raymond Bianchi of Cave Creek, Arizona. Her sister, Betty and husband, Fred are both deceased. A memorial service will be held at the First Covenant Church in Boardman, on Monday, May 7 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market Street, Youngstown, Ohio, 44512.
