Obituary

Sister Miriam Engles, OSU, of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown, died on Thursday October 20 at the Ursuline Motherhouse. She was 99. She was born in Erie, PA on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1911, the daughter of Willoughby and Ellen Fells Engles. She attended St. Ann and St. Columba Schools in Youngstown and graduated from Ursuline High School in 1930. She entered the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown on October 2, 1927 and professed final vows on August 22, 1933. Sister Miriam earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1944 from St. John College, Cleveland, where she also took post-baccalaureate classes. In her 65 years of active ministry, Sister Miriam taught at St. Columba and St. Patrick Schools in Youngstown, and St. Rose, Girard. She also served as Principal at St. Patrick, St. Rose, and was the first principal at St. Luke School, Boardman. When she left school administration, Sr. Miriam began to tutor elementary school children at St. Patrick and St. Luke. She was especially well known for mentoring spelling champions at both schools. Since then she has continued to be active in ministry at the Motherhouse, most recently praying for the needs of the church and the world. Sister Miriam leaves her sisters in community and niece Eleanor Hill, grandnieces Bridget, Patti and Jody Mahoney, Leah Evans, Diane Hill Horsely and Suellen Hill Casebolt and grandnephew David Hill. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Pearl Engles and four brothers, William, Paul, Charles and Frank Engles. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday October 25 at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 4250 Shields Rd. in Canfield. Friends may call from 3:45-4:45 pm followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 5:00 pm. Donations may be made to the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown. Arrangements were made by Fox Funeral Home.
