Obituary

Sylvia J. Mangie, 88 CANFIELD-- Private family funeral service was held Tuesday for Sylvia J. Mangie who died after a brief illness. Sylvia was born on February 6, 1920, the daughter of Michael and Rose DeBartolo. She lived on Valley Street in Smoky Hollow with her family on top of her mother's grocery store until she was 5 years old, when the family moved to Judson Street on Youngstown's south side. Sylvia graduated from South High School in 1938, and was a Dana School of Music voice major at Youngtown College where she was a member of the Phi Mu sorority. She married her high school sweetheart, the late Dr. Alfred S. Mangie, after traveling to Abilene, Texas, where her husband was serving in military. She worked as an elementary school teacher in a one room school house in Elkton, Ohio, for several years and in the Columbus City School System while her husband attended dental school. Sylvia was active in several organizations, including Wesso, Panhellenic, as well as serving in many capacities in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Corydon Palmer Dental Society. She was also a long time member of Tippecanoe Country Club. An avid bridge player, she played competitively in the 1950's, and continued playing several times each week with her Thursday and Friday ladies bridge groups up until the time of her death. In her later years, she came to view these ladies as family. Sylvia is survived by her two sons, Attorney Mark G. Mangie (Ginger) and Dr. Craig F. Mangie (Mary), both of Canfield, and two beloved grandchildren, Alex and Ashley. She is also survived by her sisters, Delores McCaffrey and Ann Ambriola, as well as several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her mother and father, her husband, her brothers Edward, James and Frank DeBartolo, and her beloved niece, Marilyn McCaffrey Cawood. The family asks that material contributions be made to the Butler Institute of American Art, 524 Wick Ave., Youngstown, OH 44502. There are no calling hours.
