WINIFRED V. MCCLEARY, 95 NEW CASTLE, PA. - Winifred V. McCleary, 95, of New Castle and North Lima, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center. She was born in New Castle on April 25, 1916, and lived there all of her life until the last few years, where she lived at Glenellen Assisted Living. She was the daughter of Harvey E. Hickling and Edna (Bahra) Hickling. Winifred married Louis R. McCleary on Sept. 30, 1940, in Louisville, Ky. They were married for nearly 59 years when he passed away on Sept. 3, 1999. Winnie and Lou owned Ye Olde Harmony House furniture and decorating store in Zelienople from 1955 to 1975. She previously worked as a decorator at Frew's Haney's and Wayside furniture stores in New Castle and McClain's Furniture Store in Sharon, Pa. Winifred attended the Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church for many years. She was also involved in many community activities, such as Eastern Star and Wimodausis. Additionally, she was very active in the New Castle Historical Society and the Buckstone Hookrafters Guild, where she designed and hooked many rugs. Gardening was also a passion of hers. Winifred leaves her daughter, Barbara (Stephen) Berman of Boardman; two grandchildren, Joshua of Berea and Stacy (Brent) Racer of Columbus; and one great-grandson, Brayden Racer. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her sister, Betty (Harold) Porter. Friends may call at the Fox Funeral Home today from 5 to 7 p.m. and at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday before the 10 a.m. funeral, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Castleview Cemetery in New Castle.
