Bessie K. Veck, 96 passed away peacefully at her home Sunday morning January 28, 2024. She was born October 6, 1927, in Youngstown, a daughter of Gregory and Diamando Magoulakis Kokinos. In her early years she attended Taft School and graduated from Youngstown State University, finishing her education at Columbia University in New York City with a master’s degree. Her professional career led her to teach for thirty years at Bennett Elementary School in Youngstown. Bessie was an active member of St. John Greek Orthodox Church, where she directed the junior and senior choirs and was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society and St. John’s Seniors. In April 2017 she received the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh, St. Photios award from Bishop Savas. Bessie was a former member of Tippecanoe Country Club. Her husband Anthony Veck, whom she married December 29, 1968, passed away January 20, 2006. She was also the sister of the late Jack Kokinos and Labrina Kastellorios.
Bessie leaves several friends and fellow church members.
Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday February 1, 2024, at St. John Greek Orthodox Church, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m.at the church, with Reverend Constantine Ursache, entombment in Calvary Cemetery. Bessie received the best care from Patty Christofer, Jane Christofer, Mona Zouner, Georgia Davis, Victor Mauro and the staff at Hospice of the Valley.
