Youngstown, Catherine “Cathy”- Fernback, 92, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 7, 2024 at home among her family. She was born December 14, 1931 in Youngstown, the eldest of 5 children born to Katie and John Senzarin. She graduated from South High School in 1949. At an early age she developed a love for music that lasted her entire life. Cathy was gifted at playing the organ and piano, and she studied classical music with Thelma Murphy-Camp, who introduced her to the Fox Funeral Home where she was the organist and a treasured fixture for over 50 years. She also played the organ for various local churches.
Cathy married Robert Fernback on July12, 1952. Aside from her organist duties, she raised 4 children and was enthusiastically involved in all their activities. She was very close to her siblings and rarely a day went by without her talking to them; she never missed a birthday or holiday. She enjoyed spending time and sharing memories with her extensive family and was an exceptional baker, known for her puff pastries. Cathy loved sports and was a lifelong Steelers fan. She was a sweet and caring person, loved by everyone she met.
Cathy is survived by her children Martin Fernback (Cindy), Daniel Fernback (Gina), Sandra Platton (Glen) all of Youngstown and Timothy Fernback (Leslie), of Mechanicsburg, PA, 10 Grandchildren, 6 Great-Grandchildren, her sisters Norma and Terri, and brother John.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert Fernback and her sister, Tillie Matteo.
To honor the wishes of Cathy and Tillie, private services were attended by close family.
