It is with great sadness that the family of Jean Marie (Scheetz) Rubenstahl, age 97 announces her peaceful passing on December 1, 2024, at Caprice Rehabilitation Center, after a brief stay.
Jean was born on October 22, 1927, in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of the late George P. and Mary (Spencer) Scheetz. She was only eight years old when her biological mother passed away in 1935. Her father remarried Edna (Ellebrecht) Scheetz.
Jean attended St. Dominic Roman Catholic Grade School and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1945. Following graduation, she worked as a bookkeeper at Century Foods. Jean met and married the love of her life, John J. Rubenstahl, Sr. on April 10, 1948. John's career working for the United States Secret Service relocated them to the Washington, D.C. area in 1951 where they raised their family. After retirement, they settled in New Middletown, Ohio. They were blessed and celebrated 48 years of marriage until John’s passing on March 17, 1996. Jean was a loyal member of Mount Calvary Roman Catholic Church and its Ladies Sodality Guild in Forestville, Maryland and St. Dominic Roman Catholic Church, and its Knights of Columbus Ladies Guild in Youngstown, OH. Jean led a prosperous life filled with love and faith in God by attending daily mass while prayers and devotions were an integral part of her life. Because of her wisdom, morals, values, Jean was admired and considered the family matriarch, an overall life of satisfaction.
An avid reader, Jean took great pride in Family History. She visited and obtained records from The National Archives and Historical Research and Genealogy in Washington, D.C. and Ellis Island, New York. She had a "special talent to organize" maintaining effective plans, prioritizing, and managing multiple tasks and details simultaneously. She composed a neat appearance, impeccable home, and was confident regardless of any situation.
She had a passion to travel and enjoyed numerous family vacations. The most memorable destinations were visiting Germany, Medjugorje in Bosnia, Alaskan Cruise, Panama Cruise, Hawaii, and the Atlantic Coastal Beaches. She was an all-around sports fan following NFL and Super Bowls, MLB and World Series, Winter and Summer Olympics, and attended NASCAR races. She loved camping, bowling, and boating in her younger years and bingo, board games, and scrapbooking in her later years. Her leisure activity was crocheting thousands of baby bonnets for newborns at Mercy Health/St. Elizabeth Hospital, Boardman, OH. Her secret to a long, healthy life was a warm cup of tea, blueberries, cookies, and ice cream~ in moderation, of course!
"A Legacy of Love", Jean is survived by her five sons, John J. Jr. (Shawna) Rubenstahl of Broomes Island, MD, Michael T. Sr. (Paula) Rubenstahl of Powhatan, OH, Gregory Rubenstahl of Fayetteville, NC, Leo G. Rubenstahl of Fayetteville, NC, and Richard (Barbara) Rubenstahl of Punta Gorda, FL. Jean also leaves her daughter-in-law JoAnn Rubenstahl of Lanham, MD, 16 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; her sister Mary Lou Rogenski of Austintown, OH, her brother-in-law Duncan Laverie of New Springfield, OH, a host of nieces and nephews, and dear friends for 70 years Laverne Kovacs and Winnie Gordon from Forestville, MD.
In addition to her parents and husband John, Jean was preceded in death by her daughter Patricia A. Pilkerton, son Joseph Rubenstahl, son-in-law Lloyd “Bill” Baker, son-in-law Cecil Pilkerton, daughter-in-law Enelrae Rubenstahl, her sisters Dorothy Laverie, Sr. Margaret Scheetz, (OSU), and her brother Paul (Susan) Scheetz.
Jean’s family is most appreciative of the wonderful care she received from Countryside at Elmwood Assisted Living in Hubbard, OH, where she.was a 6-year resident. Jean actually drove herself to Elmwood and asked the administrator Karen Delisio if she could live there. Special regards are also extended to her niece Gail Sosnosky for her devoted love, compassion, and assistance.
