Joan Bobovnyik Obituary

We are saddened to share that our loving mother, Joan Marie Bobovnyik, 95, passed away Saturday, January 10, 2026, at the Inn at Glenellen.

She was born on September 8, 1930, the daughter of Charles and Anna Margaret Dunn Snyder in Youngstown, Ohio. She was called “Peep” by the newborn nurses and that nickname followed her throughout her life. She Graduated from South High School, Class of 1948. Following graduation, she worked as a telephone operator for Ohio Bell Telephone Company.

On September 20, 1952, she married David P. Bobovnyik at St. Patrick Church in Youngstown. The couple made their home on the West Side of Youngstown where they lived for 55 years in a small two-story cement home constructed by the Carnegie Steel Mill Company at the turn of the twentieth century. Together, they raised seven children- including two sets of twins. Their family home overflowed with love, laughter, warmth, and chaos with children filling beds from the basement to the attic. In the summer evenings, all friends and neighbors had an open invitation to their front porch for coffee, evening desserts, and interesting conversation. There was always a good turnout at those front porch get-togethers.

Joan was a longstanding member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church and for years prepared traditional Slovak foods for the family. There are so many memories of Christmas celebration following Midnight Mass. She treasured her Slovak church and neighborhood and remarked on their beauty well into her final years. She became a member of St. Charles Church in Boardman after relocating to the Inn at Glenellen.

Joan was most happy when her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren surrounded her. She had a caring heart and a forgiving nature. She epitomized the writing of Henry Ward Beecher that “A mother’s heart is the child’s schoolroom” for she taught all her children kindness and respect for others through her example.

Joan will be sadly missed by her children, Vicki (Daryl) Mincey, Denise Bobovnyik (Chris Knight), David (Lisa) Bobovnyik, Debbie DeMatteo (Rich Bionci), Doug (Lonnie) Bobovnyik, Danny Bobovnyik, and Diana (Victor) Perez; her 14 grandchildren, Maribeth, Katie, Maggie, Jamie, Brittany, Brooke, Bridget, Joe, Anthony, Dominic, Alaina, Olivia, Manny and Ava; and her seven great grandchildren, Harper, Anthony, Giuliana, Gabriella, Felipe, Emma, and Lylah.

Joan’s parents, her brother Charles James Snyder, her son-in-law Joseph DeMatteo, and her daughter-in-law Cheryl Bobovnyik preceded her in death.

The family would like to express its sincere gratitude to Dr. David Rich, Patriot Hospice, Patriot Physical Therapy, and especially to all the staff and caregivers of the Inn at Glenellen in North Lima who became her extended family.
