Helen Carcella Obituary

There will be a memorial service officiated by Reverend Kevin Peters on Saturday, August 25 at 11 AM at The Fox Funeral Home for Helen (Szabat) Carcella, 96, who passed away peacefully on Monday, August 20 at Hospice House with her family by her side.

Helen was born on July 19, 1922 in Erie, Pennsylvania to Michael and Katherine (Wraga) Szabat. She was a 1940 graduate of South High School where she was the Valedictorian of her class and a member of the National Honors Society. She had an extensive career working as a secretary for Servomation, The United Steel Workers and the Operating Engineers Local 66. She was also a long-time member of St. Dominic’s Church. Helen loved going to Mountaineer and Hollywood Casinos and playing poker and Bingo with friends and family. She was especially known for being a die-hard Cavs and Steelers fan. She was extraordinarily proud of her Polish Heritage.

Besides her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her two sisters, Lottie Zarzeski of Sunrise, Florida and Josephine Urban of Pulaski, Pennsylvania, and her long-time companion, George Williams.

Helen will be deeply missed by her daughter, Sandra (Jim) Thomas of Youngstown, her son, David Carcella of Youngstown, her granddaughter, JoEllen (Tom) Gelonese of Canfield, her two great-granddaughters, Nicole and Natalie Gelonese of Canfield and her extended family including many nieces and nephews . To her family, Helen was known as “Booka.” They loved spending time with Booka and feel blessed to have had her in their lives for so long. Helen adored her rescue Pit Bull Reddy and their morning breakfast together.

Friends and family may call from 10 to 11AM on Saturday at The Fox Funeral Home, 4700 Market Street, in Boardman.

Helen’s family would like to thank Dr. Robert Spratt and his staff, Dr. Emch and his staff, the doctors and nurses at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boardman and the caring staff at Hospice House, especially Gail Fellows, for their kindness and compassion towards Helen. In lieu of flowers, Helen’s family requests that donations be made to the Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road Poland, Ohio 44514.
