Martha E. Lyden (née Ress), 99, formerly of Youngstown, Ohio, died peacefully on April 6, 2024. Born on November 6, 1924, she was the youngest of eleven children born to the late Louis M. and Anna K. Ress.
Martha attended The Rayen School, graduating in 1942. She traveled to California and worked for several years before meeting her future husband through her brother Robert. She married the late Joseph F. Lyden Jr. on May 28, 1949, and they enjoyed 63 years together.
Martha was a faithful wife and mother as her husband traveled the world on business for weeks at a time. She enjoyed a wonderful trip accompanying him to Europe in the 1960’s. After her children were grown, she was joint proprietor of The Hole in The Wall shop in Poland and eventually found her passion dealing in antiques. She was an avid collector of the very rare Lotus Ware and other pottery such as Buffalo Deldare. She and her husband enjoyed traveling to auctions and selling her wares in various antique malls.
Surviving are her children Martha A. Neveu (James), Diane Lyden, Kathleen Bultema (Ronald), Joseph F. Lyden III (Kathleen) and Nancy Shortman (Glenn). She was Grandma to Julie Simon (Joseph), Christina Zepf (Arthur), Margaux Preston (Ash), Jennifer Cake, Suzanne Bolden (Matthew), Lauren Forbus, Joseph F. Lyden IV (Rachel), Caitlin Lyden, Kathryn Standish (Evan), Glenn Shortman Jr. (Rebecca), Laura, Carolyn and Paul Shortman. Martha was also the proud Great Grandmother of 16 great grandchildren.
Her laugh was infectious and heard often by those who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be sorely missed by all who loved her.
